| "Shiatsu"
is a Japanese word meaning "finger pressure". It
is a "hands-on" bodywork technique used both as
a compliment to conventional medicine and as a preventative
/ alternative therapy. Practiced for centuries in Japan as
a traditional healing art, shiatsu is used to treat chronic
pain and ailments, while promoting relaxation and overall
well-being. It enhances the body’s natural healing ability
and prevents the progression of disease.
Shiatsu incorporates the theory of acupuncture which proposes
that our vital energy, known as "Chi" (or "Ki")
moves through the body along well defined passageways called
meridians. Balance of the meridians is considered to be essential
for health and well-being. The entire body is treated as everything
is connected with every element influencing one another.
By applying rhythmic pressure using fingers, hands, elbows
and even knees on specific points of the meridians for three
to ten seconds at a time, Shiatsu massage is meant to alleviate
any blockages within the body and promote the natural flow
of energy. It corrects the imbalances of the body, and maintains
and promotes health.
When a person’s vital energy stops flowing freely, many
symptoms of ill health may develop. Shiatsu which also utilizes
acupressure, or pressure points along with other manual therapy
techniques, has been found exceptionally effective for stress-reduction,
reducing fatigue and alleviating a wide spectrum of symptoms
such as: back pain, shoulder & neck problems, headaches,
constipation, cramps, insomnia etc. For more information,
